On the 4th of March 1978 Mrs. Govender fondly known to her customers as Ma Govender was approached by the owner of Willowvale Hotel - Jack Levine, to run the kitchen at the Indian bar.
The kitchen was very small this was due to apartheid laws that non-whites should have no entertainment facilities, but never the less Ma Govender cooked mutton curry so good that eventually she was asked to cook for the white patrons. However, this could only be done before 6 am because non-whites without permits were not allowed to interact or do business with white persons.
The word soon went around that the Willowvale Hotel sold the best Indian Curry. Ma Govender was interviewed by The Saturday Mirror which took Govender's to the next level. People from far and wide came to Willowvale to taste what everyone was bragging about and believe me they were not disappointed.
After all these years the original Govender's is still renowned for the best curries even winning a number of competitions. Govender's has perfected what others are still trying.
